split window
a window that is divided by a split bar; a window with 2 or more panes which can be independently scrolled, but that all view the same underlying document. Splitting a window is useful if the user needs to view 2 or more widely-separated portions of a document, such as viewing column headings while entering numbers into a spreadsheet, or viewing text pages while entering a table of contents in a word processor.
