prompt
A message on the computer screen indicating that the computer is ready to accept user input. In a command-line interface, the prompt may be a simple “>” symbol or “READY >” message, after which the user may type a command for the computer to process. Common prompts also include the currently active directory, e.g. “C:personalwritings>”, or the name of the program that is currently waiting for input.
