frames
(website design) a technique for dividing up a window displaying a web page so that separate areas can scroll independently and load new pages independently.
Frames are useful when something needs to be on-screen all the time, such as navigation bars or advertising, and may sometimes improve download time.
However, generally frames are not a recommended technique in website design for a large number of reasons. Typically they result in user confusion from a number of interface problems with navigation, bookmarking, printing, and so forth.
