focus ring
a ring surrounding a default button in a dialog box, used to hilite the button and indicate that the button will be activated if the Return or Enter key is hit. In many dialog boxes, the focus can be moved, for instance, by hitting the Tab key. This moves the focus ring to other selectable items in the dialog box, indicating that they accept keyboard input. This allows expert users to make selections more quickly in a dialog box using the keyboard and not a pointing device.
