Glossary » flat screen display
flat screen display
or flat panel display (FPD); a screen that is very thin, potentially using a variety of different technologies, such as LCDs and gas-plasma displays. In contrast, because of the need to direct an electron beam across the whole display, CRTs can’t cost-effectively be made smaller without sacrificing the quality of the display. Flat screen displays are frequently used in portables, hand-helds, and pen-based devices.
Passive-matrix displays are LCD displays where each pixel is controlled by activating an LCD element at the specific position on a wire grid. Active-matrix displays include a transistor at each grid point, permitting a design that generally provides a faster refresh rate but at a higher cost.
