domain knowledge
or “subject matter expertise”; knowledge about a specific field of interest; knowledge about the content area for which a piece of software is being designed, as opposed to programming knowledge or usability expertise. For instance, when building medical software, physicians and nurses have a great deal of knowledge about medical procedures and medical terminology.
User interface designers need to develop as much domain knowledge as possible when designing for a specific type of task or target audience, but as much as possible, people with expertise in the area (domain experts) should be involved in the design process.
