Site Map Diagram
A site map diagram is different than the “site map” that can be found on most websites. Although they serve similar purposes, a site map diagram, unlike a website’s text-based site map, visualizes all pages in the content inventory to illustrate parent-child page relationships, typically in the format of a flowchart. The Omni Group’s OmniGraffle and Microsoft’s Visio are useful software programs for developing site map diagrams. Site map diagrams are often several pages long; the first page of the document shows an overview of the global navigation, and subsequent pages of the document depict individual global navigation categories and their child pages. Variations of the flowchart-formatted site map diagram may be useful to indicate additional information, such as the relative importance of pages, and how areas of a website connect with one another, including navigation.
